Mission

Our mission is to empower young adults and music industry professionals of all ages through education and mentorship in the areas of music production, songwriting and the business of music, connecting them with seasoned industry professionals to enhance their growth and success in the music industry.

We do this by building an educational pipeline for music in our city, equipping young people with the knowledge, resources, and skill sets necessary to succeed in the music industry. We focus on three areas of the industry; music production, songwriting, and music business.

On the ground currently we serve youth aged 13 to early 20’s in the San Antonio area, providing online, after-school programs, practical workshops and live music showcases for aspiring artists. From music production to recording, songwriting to music business, we guide our youth to a place where they can turn part-time passions into full-time careers.

SASG began in 2016 with the mission to grow local music - and we did it fast. In our first 18 months we contributed over $250.000 to the music industry in San Antonio through workshops, cross-sector collaboration, business and legal support, and access to affordable production and recording. We impacted 5,240 community members, our volunteers logged 5,260 hours, and we hosted 42 workshops in that time.

In late 2018 we shifted our mission and began serving students in middle school and high school, building our city’s educational pipeline for music. In 2019 we focused on online production courses for young artists.

In 2021, our mission was exemplified with partners such as SA Preparatory Community School, where we served students of color in an institution that prides itself on social equality and racial justice. Our Classroom Sessions program was integrated as a pillar of their educational model within the school day, and students used their beat-making and songwriting skills as a tool for transformation and self-expression that speaks directly to their culture and identity.

We continue to serve our community through after school programming with Harlandale ISD, at several middle schools across the Southside of San Antonio. SASG was most recently engaged in daily music production and podcasting at Harlandale, Leal, Kingsborough, and Terrell Wells middle schools.

Through our community engagement we have also grown a network where young musicians can safely perform, engage with sound engineers, coordinate bookings and connect with local music professionals. Partnerships with organizations such as Hemsifair, Deco Pizzeria, Brick at Blue Star, UTSA Musician’s of Business and Inspiration 4 Life have created opportunities for SASG to continue growing the full spectrum of the music education pipeline in San Antonio.

On 1 October 2022, SASG began the next generation of Executive Leadership with the appointment of Mr. Joey Berrios as Executive Director and Mr. Dillon O’Con as Director of Operations. An assessment of key areas highlights the way ahead for San Antonio Sound Garden and places the executive team on a path for expansion.
